The game takes place two years after the events of its predecessor. Max Payne was acquitted of his numerous murders and returned to work in the police, but this time in the homicide investigation department. However, in a routine investigation, Max is faced with Mona, a woman of his past that, by all indications until now, was dead. Suddenly, he remembers all the tragic facts of his past and, to make matters worse, he discovers that someone wants his head.
