Immersion Priority: You won't find minimaps, map markers, or navigation HUDs. From diseases and immunity to hunger and body temperature, information is conveyed through a minimal toggleable HUD, or through your own observations. To survive, you must physically seek out each meal, tool, and piece of equipment. Your survival hinges on analyzing the environment, monitoring your character's status, and looting strategically.

Two terrains to explore: DayZ is set in fictional countries crafted to be authentic. The base game includes two distinct maps: the legendary Chernarus and the mysterious woods of Livonia.

Chernarus, a vast post-Soviet landscape of 230 km², remains the definitive DayZ experience. This community favorite map is a handcrafted terrain, inspired by real locations in the north Bohemia area of the Czech Republic.

Livonia offers another challenge. This 168 km² map may seem more habitable with its dense and lush forests, but appearances can be deceiving. Beneath the surface lies a deep secret that presents a new survival test even for the most seasoned players.

Survive, survive, survive: Everything is against you. Dangers lurk in the shadows and in plain sight, from aggressive infected that attack on sight to wolves and bears prowling the forests. But that's not all. You'll also have to contend with various diseases, learn to diagnose them by observing your status, and discover the necessary treatments.

Spoils and equipment are scarce, but crafting resources can help bridge the gap. Patch up your damaged clothes, light a campfire to cook your meals, create improvised tools, and scour seemingly peaceful yet dangerous towns and villages.

Friend or foe? It's your choice: Remember that up to 60 players might be trying to survive alongside you at any given moment. They might be an obstacle in your path, a valuable aid, or something in between. Use emotes and say "friendly!" in voice chat. You might end up facing the barrel of a gun or with ropes and a gag in your mouth. Or you might get the help of a kind veteran and make a lifelong friend. The possibilities are endless in DayZ. Every encounter is a unique experience.

Beyond survival: Build a base, cultivate a farm, hunt, fish, and set traps to protect your territory. Or repair a car or pickup truck and traverse the wilderness with a friend searching for high-level loot in various dynamic events like train wrecks, abandoned military convoys, PvP hot spots, points of interest, and more. You might even find complete NBC suits to venture into hazardous, contaminated zones.
